LOS ANGELES (June 30, 2014)- Over $1,100 was raised on Sunday, June 29th, 2014 during the kick off to the Walgrove Elementary Studio Lab Relief Effort hosted by local community activist and Westside real estate broker, George Chung. Featured at Chung’s “Grand Open House” for his newly listed $2.2 million Craftsman style home located at 12816 Indianapolis St. in Mar Vista, CA over 250 attendees toured the new property, viewed footage on the STEAM program, dined on freshly made tacos and entered raffles for dining experiences and Beach cruiser! All proceeds collected went to support the Studio Lab.
Since 2007 the Studio Lab at Walgrove Elementary has been encouraging Kindergarten through fifth graders with hands-on learning to theorize, test and explore in a creative and challenging environment.
Principal Olivia Adams explains, “Studio Lab is a project-based learning space which utilizes the integration of many areas in a single project through STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. In Studio Lab students work collaboratively to use materials to solve challenges and document their learning.” Weaving in multiple interdisciplinary fields, teachers bring the Studio Lab to life by incorporating lesson’s from the classroom. Here, students develop skills to prepare them for work in a global economy where innovation, technology, literacy and communication are key. The Studio Lab prides itself on their core beliefs and applies them to their teachers as well as their students. For the past 7 years, the Studio lab’s $70,000 annual budget has been supported solely through the financial contributions by the Booster Club- Friends of Walgrove. However, in the past 2 years, Studio Lab suffered cutbacks.Students’ schedules to attend are limited, instructors are stretched thin and supplies are sparse. On occasion, kids have been asked to purchase their own materials for projects. Community support is essential to restore and sustain this critical program.
A Mar Vista resident since 1976, Chung has always concerned himself with the well being of his community. Therefore, Chung created the Studio Lab Relief Campaign and will match the first $10,000 raised to support the STEAM program/Studio Lab stating, “Help encourage the next generation of
creative thinkers by supporting this program!!”
As promised George Chung will match dollar for dollar the money raised at the “Grand Open House” for his newly listed $2.2 million Craftsman style home located at 12816 Indianapolis St. in Mar Vista, CA
